Each point is held for for two to eight seconds to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance.

People are normally pleasantly surprised when they try shiatsu for the first time. It is relaxing yet the pressure is firm, and there is usually no soreness afterwards. To learn more, read the full article on shiatsu8.

Around the world and throughout history reflexology has been rediscovered and reinstated as a health practice time and time again by peoples around the globe seeking to deal with health concerns. Archeological evidence in Egypt (2330 BCE), China (2704 BCE) and Japan (690 CE) points to ancient reflexology medical systems.

In the West the concept of reflexology began to emerge in the 19th century, based on research into the nervous system and reflex. While no direct evidence of direct cross-fertilization from ancient times has been discovered, the practice of foot and hand work in a variety of cultures, belief systems and historical periods speaks to reflexology for health as a universal bridging concept.

In a reflexology chart the body is reflected on the feet or hands. It serves a s a map for technique application to target health goals.

Left foot or hand reflects the left side of the body and the right foot or hand the right side. The spine reflex area runs down the insides of the feet and hands with reflex areas for the arm and shoulder reflected toward the outside of the foot or hand. The toes and fingers mirror the head and neck as well as the parts of the body they encase. The ball of the foot mirrors the chest and upper back in addition the heart and lungs.

Halfway down the foot at the base of the long bones of the foot is represented the waistline of the body. the parts of the body above the waistline are mirrored above this line and those below sare represented below it. Internal organs lying above the body’s waistline are reflected by reflex areas above this line while those below the waistline are mirrored below this line.

A Reflexologist is a medical specialist who applies pressure to specific points in the feet, hands, or ears for the purposes of improving general health. Similar to Acupuncture points, reflexology points are thought to coincide with different energy channels in the body. Application of pressure to a particular point stimulates the muscles, organs, and nerves that lie along that zone, or channel, allowing them to function more effectively.

Reflexology can be used in the treatment of many conditions. In addition, it can help individuals with stress reduction, the promotion of deep relaxation, the improvement of circulation and energy, and overall detoxification. As with any CAM treatment, please keep your CAM provider and PCP informed of any alternative or conventional treatments you are currently undergoing to insure safety and suitability.

During a reflexology appointment, the therapist will ask you questions to determine your present condition. She or he will then apply pressure to the hands and feet – according to a reflexology foot map. Different spots will, theoretically, have an effect on different internal organs. So, you press on spot X on the sole of the foot, and healing takes place in, say, internal organ Y.

Reflexology tools are based on this same map that traces the reflexes in the human body. You can buy several popular tools to use at home, including:
# Reflexology gloves – to massage the palms
# Reflexology mats – for use in meditation and yoga
# Reflexology socks – a reflexology foot chart printed on a sock
# Reflexology kits – that often include a mix of foot and hand therapies

According to some reflexologists, stimulating nerve endings in these extremities has an effect on the whole body’s nervous system, which promotes healing. Others take a more mystical approach, believing that “life energy” can be blocked or put into imbalance, and reflexology corrects this.

We all know that having our feet massaged feels good – especially after a hard day of work. A good feeling can lead to endorphin release and decreased stress.

This whole body treatment was first introduced in the West by Dr. William Fitzgerald in 1913. At this time Dr. Fitzgerald was a medical professional, working as an ear, nose and throat specialist and surgeon. However, when working with patients’ feet, the doctor noted that when he applied pressure to specific parts, it sometimes affected another portion of the body in a positive way. Working from this newfound theory, Dr. Fitzgerald created his first reflexology chart. He divided the body into ten vertical zones. The zones traced reflexes on the hands and feet, and noted that when pressure was applied to these “zones” other areas and organs of the body responded.

Today, a reflexology therapist will still apply acupressure and massage to the ears, hands and feet within these same zones. The client is said to benefit from improved circulation, detoxification, reduced tension and the body’s ability to heal itself. The Association of Reflexologists claims that this treatment method can be effective for back pain, migraines, infertility, arthritis and many other problems.

[2298] Ortho Bionomy Massage

When I was first introduced to Ortho-Bionomy, I had been doing massage therapy for a few years and was close to being burned out. I had studied (and was quite good at) a wide variety of therapies from deep-tissue to subtle energy work. But there was a part of me that was frustrated with the chronic reoccurrence of the same problems.Clients would come in with certain muscle contractions; I would stretch them out and then they would come back a week or two later with the same patterns. I was worn out by the struggle of fighting their body: trying to move it from where it was to where I thought it should be. Inside of me somewhere, I believed there must be an easier way to help people out of their pain.

One day when my shoulders and neck were really hurting from a full day of doing massage, I found a colleague, James Wahler, working at the Lotus Sutra in Cotati. (If you remember this place you’ve been in the area quite a while.) I asked him for the professional courtesy of sticking his thumbs in my aching shoulders. (This was the fastest relief I knew at the time, even though I knew it would not totally relieve the discomfort.) He told me to lie down on the massage table and asked if he could first try a technique he had just learned.

He gently turned by head into a very comfortable position and just held me there. I thought to myself, When are you going to be done with this fooling around and get down to the thumbs? He straightened my head and said I was done. I said, No way, I need as I reached up to the spot that had been killing me. The pain was gone! I found some additional smaller spots and he repeated the procedure and relieved them also.
