Massage School in Hawaii

A dynamic learning environment exists at schools that follow massage therapy programs. The information on massage therapy might be released through group class discussions at a school where teaching superb massage is the number one priority. The practice of using touch as a healing method is close to the heart of many learned massage therapy instructors, and that love comes through when classes are in session. Students learn more from hands-on training than they do through bookwork and instructors are happy to share their own unique gifts and techniques with students who will one day become licensed massage therapists.

There are also portals to learning through the internet and people of all ages and backgrounds can gain information on massage therapy. Some people might want to know about the art of Shiatsu, the offspring of acupressure massage treatments, or learn about other forms of massage such as orthopedic massage, lomilomi, or Jorei. Others might want to know more about reflexology and how certain parts of the foot are correlated to other parts of the body and lead to a whole body experience of healing when those body parts are massaged.

The history of massage reveals how this ancient healing practice has withstood the test of time Massage therapy has been touted as one of the oldest forms of medical treatment. First recorded in China during the second century B.C. in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, massage was mentioned as a recommendation for the treatment of certain ailments. In India, the traditional healing system of Ayurvedic medicine also prescribed massage for a variety of medical conditions. Physicians of ancient Greece and Rome utilized massage as one of the primary methods to treat pain. In the West, during the fifth century B.C., Hippocrates also instructed his fellow physicians on the many benefits of rubbing.
History of Swedish Massage

It would seem that the impulse to rub a hurt was quite instinctual, but up until the early 1800s, there were few advances in the actual massage techniques until Swedish massage was developed. A Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling is often mistakenly associated with Swedish massage. He actually incorporated massage with medical gymnastics and physiology and developed the Swedish Gymnastic Movement System. Early on, physiotherapy was actually originally based on Ling’s manual methods.
Massage Therapy had been used for many medical and psychiatric conditions until scientific breakthroughs in medical technology and pharmacology substantially changed the foundation of medicine in the West. Quite simply, drugs became the solution for many ailments and electrical instruments gradually replaced manual methods.

The early Polynesian settlers brought their own form of massage and, like a canoe plant, it evolved to become something uniquely Hawaiian. It was practiced by everyone, from child to chief. As an indigenous practice that evolved over hundreds of years in isolated valleys throughout the island chain, there are many different “schools” of lomilomi with different approaches and techniques.

After American missionaries arrived in 1820 and converted many in the Kingdom of Hawaii to Christianity, traditional healing arts were scorned as heathen and primitive. Various laws prohibited “heathen” worship and any related Native Hawaiian healing practices. Lomilomi as part of medical practice went underground. But lomilomi as restorative massage remained popular not only among the Hawaiians, but among foreign residents and visitors as well.

American writer Charles Nordhoff wrote about his experience with lomilomi massage in his 1875 book, Northern California, Oregon, and the Sandwich Islands. [1] For Robert Louis Stevenson it was disagreeable, but English adventurer Isabella Bird found it delightful. (Chai 2005: 77) Not only did foreigners receive lomilomi, they also gave it. According to the first Director of the Bishop Museum, writing in 1908, one of the most skilled practitioners was Sanford Dole (one of the leaders of the overthrow of the Kingdom). (Chai 2005: 26)Although the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawaii banned curing through “superstitious methods” in 1886, massage was not subject to legislation until 1945. In 1947, the Board of Massage was established to regulate lomilomi and massage. The law required practitioners to pass a written test on anatomy, physiology and massage theory.

In performing reflexology, only the fingers and hands are used. Also, the use of gadgets, oils or lotions are unnecessary. Some may actually care to ask if there are any side effects in having a reflexology session. The answer is no. Reflexology massage is a therapy focused on normalizing body functions. It is a safe and effective method of improving one’s health. In fact, it is claimed that this massage is a remedy for various illnesses related to the skin, digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system, immune system, respiratory system, and joints.

However, just like every other treatments, precaution is strongly advised. Before going on a reflexology session, meals should not be taken an hour before the session, and half an hour after the massage, one should drink art least 500 cubic centimetre of warm water, except fro those who are suffering from heart or kidney disease who should remember to drink a maximum of 150 cubic centimetre of water. Also, pressure should not be applied to the bones.

And for those who are suffering from serious heart and kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and epilepsy, you should consult you physician about having reflexology sessions. Minor detoxification symptoms may include a slight worsening of the condition or drying of the mouth which likely will pass shortly.

The lomilomi massage therapy is an ancient form or therapeutic treatment which originated from the Polynesian islands and is still widely used and taught in Hawaii . The technique is based on the Polynesians basic philosophy that everything seeks harmony and everything seeks love. And that would explain the fundamental strokes which are performed gently yet deeply into the muscles.

Although a massage practitioner uses his fingers, palms, knuckles, elbows, forearms, feet, knees, and even stones and sticks, the distinct characteristic of this exotic massage is the continues flowing strokes used to caress and relax the body. Thus, it is sometimes called as the loving hands massage.

The long continues strokes actually stimulates the energy in the body while the caresses help relax the body totally. The Hawaiians correlate their memory and beliefs with the energy stored in the cells and thus believe that by encouraging the flow of total energy in the entire body, coupled with the loving caresses, one is not only relaxed but is assisted of freeing himself from old beliefs, patterns and behaviours which tend to limit one self. In short, Hawaiians also look at things in terms of energy flow. Thus, they believe that a belief or idea can hamper the flow of energy, similar to muscle tension.

The onset of lymphedema may be detected through a number of symptoms including pains, weakness, tightness or heaviness on your arm or leg. Also, your wrists or ankles may not be as flexible as it used to.

Lymphedema is incurable. However, if mild lymphedema is treated accordingly, the condition can be prevented from worsening. There are some institutions that offer lymphedema training in Hawaii. These establishments teach people the proper way of handling the illness. The treatment includes exercises, massages, pneumatic compression, and the proper usage of bandages and compressions garments.

Light exercises of the affected limbs can help pump out the lymph fluid out of the limb. Also, the affected lymph must be cleaned regularly and must be applied with lotion. There is a special massage technique that can be performed on the affected limb, called manual lymph drainage which can further help in pumping out the lymph fluid out of the affected limb. Then, bandages should be wrapped around the affected limb to promote movement of the lymph fluid from the affected limb and into the trunk of the body. Also, when doing chores, make sure to wear protective gears to avoid getting cut.

Some may be advised to undergo pneumatic compression wherein the infected limb is inserted into an inflatable sleeve. The sleeve is connected to a pump which will be inflated at certain intervals to put pressure on the limb and will eventually encourage the lymph fluid to move. And lastly, the use of compression garments may be advised to prevent recurrence of the swelling of the affected area.

The preventive measures mentioned above are just trickles of what one may learn from attending a lymphedema training in Maui.

To obtain this skill requires substantial experience. Various places all over the world including Canada, Australia, and Hawaii have massage therapy schools that teach this therapy program.

And due to the widespread practice of shiatsu, there are currently many different styles of this technique. There are those who perform shiatsu massages primarily focusing on acupuncture points to massage their clients back to health. Some concentrate more on the body or along the energy pathway to influence the flow of energy that goes in and out of the body.

Generally, shiatsu therapists skilfully stimulate the immune system and the inherent healing powers of the human body in order to promote recovery as well as prevention from sickness. It is believed that healing and taking care of the body as a whole helps restore the functions of the nervous system, muscles, circulatory system, glands, and bones.
