The medical benefits of massage were refined in certain texts by the Chinese. Their medicinal therapies and subsequent benefits are dated to about 2700 BCE. The Chinese combined the knowledge of several laymen to create specific styles of massage treatments. The history of massage shows that the Chinese incorporate certain techniques when performing massage. Those techniques are widely known by titles such as acupuncture, acupressure, amno, and tui na. The concept of massage for the Chinese people was that massage would promote and correct any imbalances in the body with regard to energy.

The healing methods found in Chinese massage treatments inspired Japan to study it in 1000 BCE, and the Japanese created the massage form anma, or Shiatsu from their studies. This massage treatment was found to stimulate the body’s natural resistance to many illnesses. Using the same pressure point system found in other treatments such as reflexology, the Japanese expanded the therapy to the use of fingers, thumbs, and the palms of the hand.
